What are the basic steps I need to know about operating my hot tub?
TWO BASIC STEPS NEEDED TO OPERATE A HOT TUB
  1. KEEP IT CLEAN
  2. KEEP THE WATER BALANCED

STEP 1- KEEP IT CLEAN
This is not as easy as it seems. But this is the main reason we all have our own hot tubs instead of using public hot tubs.

  • MANAGE THE SANITIZER LEVEL.
You have a choice of two sanitizers. Chlorine of Bromine, You must manage the Free Available Sanitizer Level (FASL) at all times. This is sanitizer in the water that has nothing to do and is available to go to work at any time. An example of this is 3-4 people in the tub. This is called demand. The more you use a hot tub the more sanitizer it takes to keep it clean. Most people have an automated feeding system like a floater or the frog system. But keep in mind these systems are not smart and will not feed more in the event of a high demand. Always have a powdered  version that is easy to add and fast acting to keep up with demand.

  • SHOCK IT
This term is slang for Oxidizing. Oxidizing is something you must to on a regular basis such as weekly or biweekly depending on hot tub bather load. Oxidizing removes unfilterable waste from the tub. An example of this is Ammonia which comes from sweat. Did you know you can sweat up to a pint during a good hot tub soak?
The are two ways to Oxidize.
  1. One is with a sanitizer. In this case you must add enough to raise the FASL to 10 plus ppm. Just adding a teaspoon of sanitizer is not oxidizing, it is just adding to the FASL.
  2. The other way is called a non sanitizer shock and is what we recommend for regular oxidizing. The product we use is called  SPA LITE and is simple and easy to use.
In both these cases the cover must be left off or open for a period of time while the oxidizing is taking place. This will extend the life of your cover.

STEP 2- WATER BALANCE
You must know how to test and adjust the Alkalinity and the PH. Alkalinity first and then PH.
  • Alkalinity is a measure of buffer. You must have the correct level of buffer in order to control the PH
  1. PH is by far the most important. It is a measure of water that tells you if the water is acidic or basic. We of course want a neutral PH. Nobody would be comfortable soaking in acidic water.

There is a little more to learn and these are just the basics. If you need help in any way please bring a water sample to the store at anytime and we will help you get on the right track.

HAPPY TUBBING!
